Cynthia Catania – Something Better (2022)
You open any and all of those cooking competition shows and all the judges and professional cooks keep repeating one thing: “keep it simple.” In most cases, the contestants heed that advice because doing things in a simple manner can expose all your faults. Another field where the reality of that maxim is quite visible, or to better say audible, is music. You really have to be great at your craft to come up with an excellent song by not complicating things or coming up with “too many notes”, to quote Amadeus (one of the great films of yesteryear).
On ‘Something Better’, her latest single, emerging LA singer-songwriter Cynthia Catania seems to understand that ‘cooking’ rule perfectly. She comes up with an excellent, simple melody that starts off easy. Bringing in just a few extra elements with a brief and lean arrangement touch makes the song truly stand out. And she does it by not overcomplicating things and letting her melody line and her voice stand out.
Cynthia has received some great support on her previous releases from quite a few music outlets, and now she hopes to make an even bigger name for himself across Irish media and around the world. Listening to this track, you get the impression she just might get it. Oh, and she did get the title of the song quite right – ‘Something Better’, indeed. She hits the mood of the times when we strive for something better.
