Cush Wallace – Types of Ways (2022)

With his single ‘Types of Ways’, Cush Wallace showcases the power of his vocals, while enveloping you in a stripped-back melody. Taking his characteristic dreamy waves of music to another level, he combines them with rapid rap bars to draw you into the personal anecdote of the track. With lyrics that touch on relationships, the single has more to unpack than first meets the ear.

While Wallace is a classically trained guitarist and cellist, his multi-instrumental style has a more contemporary vibe to it. Using skills honed over the years, he moulds West Coast hip-hop to hazy croons, before adding a sprinkling of his Afro-Latino roots. Since emerging on the music scene in 2013, he has steadily been gaining a serious following and this single will let you know why.

‘Types of Ways’ opens with a soft touch that gently caresses your senses. The rapid cymbal shuffles through the top line of the melody, while that initial soft caress continues to wash across your skin. It is a relatively stripped-back melody that tenderly keeps you moving through the single. The deeper beats that make their way into the soundscape later in the track add a wonderful depth to the sound that is overall very light. You can feel a touch of contemporary RnB wrapped in hip-hop sensibilities as you listen to the melody. There is something about the movement that has you lightly swaying to the rhythm.

While the melody keeps you moving through the single, it is Wallace’s vocals that are the real star of the show. His performance not only gives the single body, it also keeps you hooked with his smooth movement between RnB and almost tender rap. From the first word, his voice slides across the gentle touches of the melody with a rather catchy vibe. There is a touch of summer heat to his performance as he wraps his vocals around lyrics that touch on a connection with someone. His vocals bring an amazing texture to the track, which increases the depths of the single, while also getting you lost in the personal anecdote of the lyrics. His laid-back rapping style is great to listen to as you feel the urge to relax back into it while also gently bopping to the movement.
