CS Hellman – The Fear I Felt (2023)

Earlier this year, singer-songwriter CS Hellman returned to the music scene and streamed straight into our ears with the single ‘Up Til Dawn’. With honest lyricism and superb guitar skills, Hellman wraps listeners in a mystical magical musical spell. Beginning his musical journey as a child, he began playing the piano and eventually picked up a guitar as a teenager and he hasn’t put it down.

The youngest of four children, Hellman was exposed to a plethora of artists from his siblings’ cassettes and CDs of The Bangles, Madonna, Van Halen, Paula Abdul, AC/DC and Green Day, to his mum playing The Beatles in the car (she actually saw them in concert!). It was hearing the masterful guitar of Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughn that piqued his interest in the guitar.

Following the track ‘Up Til Dawn’, US-based Hellman tips his hat at the rock and pop sounds of the 80s and early-90s. Bringing a strong alternative rock flavour to ‘The Fear I Felt’, we feel the heaviness of his guitar matching pounding drums to create a bold swirl of rock music. Yet, while there is a strong alternative rock vibe to the tune with a tinge of U2 spread across the melody, a slight slip of 80s pop wafts through with Hellman’s hushed vocals.

Just as the melody has you twirling about in a luscious swirl of kaleidoscopic, the lyricism is as profound and all-consuming. Known for his emotionally charged, brutally honest, dark anthems, Hellman channels frustration, fear, anger and turmoil in his songs. ‘The Fear I Felt’ takes us on a personal journey as Hellman becomes a musician.

“’The Fear I Felt’ is a coming-of-age story for me developing into a songwriter and artist. In my early development, my dad told me that I wasn’t good enough to do it. I had to prove him wrong, that I was capable of doing it if I worked really hard at it.” – CS Hellman on ‘The Fear I Felt’

Raw, heartfelt and filled with vulnerability, as well as empowerment and hopefulness, CS Hellman releases his anthemic single ‘The Fear I Felt’.
