Crux – Empty Home (2023)

From their 2020 single ‘Slaving Away’ to the 2023 track ‘Save Me’, UK-based band Crux has turned our head with their inspiring rock sound. I might place them in the rock genre but, honestly, Crux weaves different styles into a sound that is entirely Crux and nothing else. In ‘Save Me’, the lads shifted from upbeat punk to heavier progressive rock matching the profound theme of authoritarianism in society. This diving into provocative themes continues in the new single ‘Empty Home’.

Following ‘Save Me’, ‘Empty Home’ is Crux’s first release in 2023. Just as they slipped from punk to prog-rock in their last track, the group travels again across the musical spectrum to a melting pot of nostalgic rock styles. Slivers of 70s folk-rock lurk beneath a classic rock style with strong grunge meets indie-rock inspiration. Think Radiohead with hints of Uriah Heep and Wings in the background, and you’re probably in that vintage ballpark. While Crux does present a retro rock vibe in their music, a modern-day alternative rock flutters through transcending time in mystical melody.

Along with the merging of vintage styles, Crux is a stand-out act with their melodies elegantly expressing the song’s profound theme. ‘Empty Home’ is a song about isolation, the slow progression of time and its detrimental effect on oneself. Opening with a light-hearted combination of guitars and drums, there is no need to worry about the future; however, as the song continues a crescendo to crashing guitars swirling about pounding drums. The swoop of music is bold, brash and elegantly captures how a simple carefree existence can quickly explode to an overwhelming rush of desperation tinged with frustration, angst and depression.

“’Empty Home’ was written during the lockdown and the lyrics discuss the isolation so many of us felt during that period and how we effectively lost two years, and that that time will never come back again. Entropy is a key theme to this song; time never stops for anyone and unfortunately, nothing lasts…” – Crux on ‘Empty Home’
