Crozier – Die Young (As Late As You Can) (2023)

Take the talents of Scottish musician Alan Crozier, Spoonr guitarist Nick Prentice, and Lonehead vocalist Martin Jenkins, and what do you have? You have the collaborative force of nature called Crozier. A one-off collaboration between these three powerhouses, Crozier comes together to celebrate life in the present moment with their single ‘Die Young (As Late As You Can)’. This is my introduction to these artists, so come with me as I delve into this exciting new project.

Released on the music start-up iOcco Music, ‘Die Young (As Late As You Can)’ is a fusion of folk rock with slight country-inspired tinges. A combination of pounding drums, dynamic guitars and interspersed keyboard brings the old-school rock sound, while the light-hearted acoustic guitar charmingly being plucked throughout the track brings the strong folk element to the track. The thing is, while the melody can hold its own with a nostalgic flair driven through the tune, it is Jenkins’ bold vocals that bring a contemporary edginess to the song.

Most songs, particularly folk songs, are known to have a profoundness underlying a laidback ambience – this is the case with ‘Die Young (As Late As You Can)’. As I mentioned, the single is about celebrating life and “making the most of it regardless of your age”; however, this empowering and optimistic message can also explore the elegant recklessness of “living your best life”. Charming in its sound with a heart-warming tenderness, ‘Die Young (As Late As You Can)’ embraces listeners and pushes them to achieve what they want. Yet, the look at different characters and how they chose to live their lives is food for thought.

“I was attending a funeral for a friend’s father who had lived a full life dying in his mid-eighties in 2019…that really struck a chord with me and led me to explore the ideas about each of the characters in the song’s lyrics…” – Alan Crozier on ‘Die Young (As Late As You Can)’
