CRIM – When Summer Ends (2021)
Growing up is something we all have to do but that does not make it any less daunting. Drawing on his own feelings about growing up, CRIM expresses the desire to move forward in life while stumbling over the fear of the unknown in ‘When Summer Ends’. Packed with the overwhelming thoughts and anxiety young people feel when they finish school and are thrust into the adult world, he lets you know that you are not alone in what you are feeling.
Since his debut single, CRIM has been gaining a dedicated fanbase due to his honest tackling of real-world issues. While there was a brief period of inactivity after his last release, this single thrusts him back into the spotlight. An honest coming of age single that captures emotions so many face, the mixtures of emo and rap is a true feast for the ears.
‘When Summer Ends’ opens with a really gentle melody that makes you think of lazy summer days. From deep below, the beat comes through and tap against your ears. The mixture of emo rock and rap-rock is delicately handled to create a soothing melody that you can rest on while the lyrics flow through you. Later in the track, the gentleness of the summer days gives way to a pulse of guitars which is like the cresting of anxiety.
The vocals have a floating feeling when they enter like those moments when you float on the cusp of sleep on a warm day. This vocal delivery helps the emotions of the track shine before a more aggressive vocal hit takes over. This aggressive call is packed with anxiety and the need for everything to stop and not move forward. The second verse is all rap-rock that enhances the overwhelming feeling of change that many feel. When the guitars pulse, CRIM’s vocals call out with all the confusing and painful emotions that wash over you on the cusp of adulthood.
CRIM captures the anxiety and overwhelming feelings that encase you in the moments before falling into the adult world in ‘When Summer Ends’. While the melody has a very soothing feeling, it does move to a pulse of anxiety. The vocals match this movement with a touch of pain and the desire for everything to stay as it is.
