Couvo – Why Do You Want (2023)

Referred to as “anthemic” (Mesmerized), “perfect ear candy for the soul” (We Write About Music), “…sensational” (Roadie Music) and “the punk Springsteen” by some guy at his basement show, Couvo is certainly making an impact on audiences across the globe. The solo project of singer-songwriter Josh Couvares, Couvo weaves poetic lyricism into intimate but punchy melodies – those melodies that stick with you for hours, days or months to come. The latest addition to Couvo’s discography is the new single ‘Why Do You Want’.

Hitting our speakers in 2022 with ‘Horses & Divorces’, The Other Side Reviews (that’s us!) were intrigued by Couvo’s heartfelt honesty as he looks at the grittier side of daily lives. Just like Springsteen, this US-based musician is unafraid to take a deeper gander into the realm of both political and personal arenas. In his new track ‘Why Do You Want’, he takes a straightforward question and digs deeper looking at the darker, intimate and intense desires of our soul.

Following his well-received single ‘When I Grow Up Again’, Couvo shifts from a ballad-style melody with intoxicating piano sections to a 1990s blend of grunge and alternative rock. Pounding drums meet crashing guitars with heart-pounding ferocity. Slather Couvo’s brash vocals atop and you have a melody critically examining “both the political and the personal” wants.

Slamming us back to rock sounds of the 90s, Couvo blends the raw intimacy of Radiohead with the power of Smashing Pumpkins and the grittiness of Nirvana in ‘Why Do You Want’. Yet, while the painful yearning of yesteryear breaks through in Couvo’s scorching song, a contemporary rock vibe oozes from ‘Why Do You Want’. I find his vocals particularly intriguing as they reach to the depths of your soul trying to find and express that dark answer to this complex question.
