Cosmo Blue – Take Hold of the Night (2022)

Described as a combination of 80s punk and grunge covered by tinges of pop-punk and post-punk, Cosmo Blue brings a contemporary edginess to older sounds in their music. With the aim of sharing direct, simple and authentic messages through sonic swirls, the Australia-based band can turn heads and hold you in the palm of their hands. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Take Hold of the Night’.

Penned as a tribute to their teenage years, ‘Take Hold Of The Night’ turns time back to the days when your world revolved around parties, hangovers, fast food and not considering the consequences. No responsibility, no cares and a happy face at the end of each day…then enter adulthood. While we fear the loss of such carefree days, they disappear soon after reality hits you like a slap in the face. Yet, despite the abrupt shock of adult life, Cosmo Blue turns back time (even if it is only metaphorically) recapturing the innocence, bounciness and joviality of a “come what may” existence helping you lose yourself in those treasured memories.

With strong influences from The Hives, The Strokes and Kasabian, ‘Take Hold of the Night’ is a hard-hitting blast of indie rock. With the sharpness of The Strokes to the boldness of Kasabian, Cosmo Blue have you heading one thousand miles per hour from the first chord. An upbeat, high-paced, dangerously fast melody combines dynamic guitars and pounding drums in the whirlwind arrangement.

What I love is how the pace continues throughout the full song having you twirling about with kaleidoscopic lights flitting about you, then a sort of crash. Approximately mid-way through the frenzied music, there is a lull in the arrangement letting you catch your breath but don’t get too comfortable. Just as the sigh of relief hit, Cosmo Blue pick up the pace again tossing you out with a bold, crazy oomph.

Easily one of the more versatile and innovative songs I have heard in months, Cosmo Blue has your heart pumping at a million miles per hour with ‘Take Hold of the Night’.
