Cooper Castelle – You Were the One (2022)

Cooper Castelle draws on a range of rock tones to tell the story of ‘You Were the One’. His infectious music merges with lyrics that often leave a bittersweet aftertaste packed with longing or the thought of barely holding on. Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Castelle offers an open book of consciousness that leaves you feeling like you are relating to the real person behind the music.

A multi-instrumentalist, Castelle fuses indie rock, indie pop and alternative tones for his upbeat and slower acoustic tones. As his second single, this track offers another taste of what he has to offer and what his upcoming EP will bring. The sonic tour of his consciousness that starts with this track will be taken to new heights by the EP.

The thrumming of a guitar gains your attention in the opening of ‘You Were the One’. This single melodic line leads you to some slapping drums that lead you through the opening verse. The jangle of the guitars steadily turns into the punchier rock flow. There is a bounce to the melody that makes you think it would be upbeat, but this is countered by a wave of uncertainty. The melody is packed with interesting movements that take the single from punchy punk rock to slightly melancholic indie rock. Through all of this, you are going to be riding the flow of the melody that is rather unstoppable. Woven into the jangle and push of the guitars is an authentic edge that lets you know the single is packed with honesty. The rise and fall of the music almost mimics the rollercoaster of emotions and thoughts that we have all gone through at some point.

As you ride the flow of the melody, Castelle’s vocals enter with a punchy delivery that emphasises the opening lyrics. You are able to perfectly picture the scene that the lyrics set, before the more melodic vocal flow brings the emotions of the track. You are first hit with a soft affection, before a twist of uncertainty hits you and you start to worry about things. This moves into a sadness that you can’t quite explain, that is enhanced by the melody. His performance is packed with emotions that tumble together and flow in a really relatable way. At times, he has you falling into affection, only to wonder if this is a good idea, leaving you to ride the uncertainty of your emotions.

Using a dynamic melodic and vocal arrangement, Cooper Castelle has you riding a range of emotions and tapping into various thoughts in ‘You Were the One’. After the thrumming guitar gets your attention, you are tossed into a ranged melody that bounces from punchy beats to melodic flows. This movement enhances the vocals as they traverse the full spectrum of emotions, while tapping into the different thoughts that run through our heads.
