common goldfish – Shout Louder (2022)

A well-known name across the London music scene, common goldfish is an artist that cannot be pigeon-holed. While he already has a loyal following across the gig scene performing at notable venues like Luna Lounge and The Salisbury, this indie-rock singer-songwriter is reaching more listeners on a daily basis – and on an international level. Featured on Clash Magazine, Joy of Violent Movement, Turtle Tempo, Jammerzine, YMX and various playlists, the singer-songwriter is turning many critics’ heads. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Shout Louder’.

Following his debut single ‘Feel The Fuzz’, common goldfish combines dynamic guitars, pounding drums and synths in the ethereal ‘Shout Louder’. While one may consider this something shoegaze-ish in the beginning, as the track progresses you notice a stronger leaning toward 90s rock. This is particularly true with the crescendos of guitars into catchy choruses. What I find most unique is the interspersed keyboard sounds adding an eclectic quality to the song.

Creating a kaleidoscopic tone to a guitar-driven single, listening to ‘Shout Louder’ is like losing yourself in a sonic whirlpool. The otherworldliness of the track melds well with the mature steadiness of instrumentation making it just too difficult to describe. Common goldfish explains that he loves “the idea of energy flowing through a crowd. It’s completely intangible, but yet there’s nothing more real to everyone in that moment.”

Yes, there are strong tones of 90s rock with psychedelic guitars, as well as a retro-rock element; however, common goldfish demonstrates a strong contemporary edginess that makes him boundary-breaking. If you really want to know what common goldfish is all about, listen to his music and taste the sound.
