common goldfish – Low Lights and Throwback Tunes (2023)

Nostalgic but contemporary. Electronic but with rock-inspired tones. Obscure but mellifluous. This is common goldfish, or at least the hypnotic qualities oozing from his intoxicating melodies. The brainchild of UK-based singer-songwriter Jonty Lovell, common goldfish has a reputation for being engaging and enchanting. From his first release, ‘Full The Fuzz’ in 2022, the self-taught musician and producer is turning heads across the blogosphere with coverage from CLOUT, Lost In The Manor, Notion, The Music Enthusiast, Clash, LDN Magazine, Joy of Violent Movement, and many others. Alongside the popularity drummed up by numerous notable publications, common goldfish is garnering a loyal following with gigs at iconic venues across London. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Low Lights and Throwback Tunes’.

Following the well-received singles ‘Shout Louder’ and ‘I Don’t Feel Today’, ‘Low Lights and Throwback Tunes’ is common goldfish’s first release in 2023. Bursting into the new year with a psychedelic groove, ‘Low Lights and Throwback Tunes’ is one of those dance tracks that have you tapping your toe from the first chord. An obscure combination of electronic beats brings a synthetic element to the single; however, the piano backing brings a pop edginess to the soundscape. Moreover, there is a nostalgic Pet Shop Boys meets Depeche Mode post-punk tone with his mellow vocals turning the fuzzy soundscape on its head.

Using the synth-driven melody with tinges of piano and guitar behind the foggy ambience, common goldfish appears to find the balance between organic and electronic sounds in ‘Low Lights and Throwback Tunes’. When speaking about the track, common goldfish explains that “I had a vocal hook in mind, but the lyrics came later through collaboration with an old friend of mine who’s a writer. He’d sent me some poetry he’d been working on and the first line of one poem really jumped out…I was immediately hit with a sense of nostalgia and knew that had to be the basis of the song.”

Sending you twirling about on a fluffy kaleidoscopic cloud, common goldfish invokes mellifluous feelings of calm energy in ‘Low Lights and Throwback Tunes’.
