Colouring – Lune (2023)

The brainchild of singer-songwriter Jack Kenworthy, Colouring melds the sounds of post-Britpop artists like Coldplay and Keane, rubs in the electronic and rhythmic cues of Radiohead, then twists it about creating a unique flair of alternative pop. While this is my introduction to Colouring, he is already established as a musician internationally. Two years ago, his debut album Wake saw him tour across the USA with The 1975 and then travelling back to the UK to headline his own sold-out shows. Skip ahead to 2023 and he returns to the music scene with his latest single ‘Lune’.

Following his 2021 single ‘Lean On’, Colouring shifts to a heavier synth-based tone in ‘Lune’. With its hushed veil of synths masking the rich vocals, ‘Lune’ offers a wistful, whimsical kaleidoscopic flow of music. Yet, the punctuating beats looping throughout the track add an abrupt edginess, but I am unsure if this is the intention. Floating along in a river of bright lights and dreamy swooshes, Colouring guides you through a foggy perfumed arrangement with a pulsating heartbeat below.

The melody alone can have you lost in a world of dreamy music. The thing is, at least for me, it is Colouring’s vocals that lead you to the sublime. In a haunting but simultaneously comfortable way, Colouring showcases his great vocal range tipping his hat at lower regiments with the higher tones sending shivers down your spine. One thing I find interesting is how the embracing nature of the melody expresses the poetic lyricism’s theme of togetherness.

“For me, this is the song about teamwork in a relationship. It’s a message of togetherness between two people during adversity and how you prop each other up when the other feels weak.” – Colouring on ‘Lune’

In addition to the single, Colouring released an official music video for ‘Lune’. You can view the video below or on the independent record label Bella Union’s YouTube channel.
