Colorfuzz – At First Sight (2022)
There are many people who have experienced an instant connection with someone through a single glance. This is something that Colorfuzz has experienced and turned into his aptly titled single ‘At First Sight’. Drawing on his own experience, he throws us into a summer weekend night through a melody packed with psychedelic vibes, airy synths and a groove that gets you moving.
As he weaves the tale of instant connection through eye contact, he delves into the feelings of mystery at never finding the person he had a connection with again. A one-man band, Kyle Merritts started this musical project in 2019 when he was fooling around on Garage Band. After taking things a little more seriously, he released an album last year and is growing his fanbase.
‘At First Sight’ slowly builds with a twinkle before hitting you with the push of the guitar and drums. There is a lot going on in the opening of the melody that sets the psychedelic vibes of the track. The synths warble over the bopping flow of funkier rock in the low levels. You are driven forward by the low level, while the synths fill your head with a dizzying edge that leaves you feeling a little off-kilter. This all seems to stabilise through the verse as the twang of the bassline moves through you. The layering of the melody is really outstanding as it perfectly captures that moment you lock eyes with someone and feel an instant connection. The synths are the heady bubbling feeling that fills your head as you rise on clouds, while the thrum of the bass is reality calling you back. Not only is the melody a fantastic encapsulation of the moment, but it is also a stunning display of the fusion sound Colorfuzz is capable of.
Weaving their way through the middle layer of the melody are the vocals that carry a touch of both the thrumming groove and airy synths. There is an echo to the vocals that creates this expansive feeling to the single, while also closing in around you to ensure you are captured in the web of the music. Through the lyrics, you are drawn into a night where a connection is made only for you to never see the person again after the initial spark. While this single taps into a personal experience, there is a collective feeling to the lyrics that makes it easy for anyone to connect with.
