Cold Equations – Set The Boy Free (2023)
Borne of a need to escape the disillusionment of modern-day society, Cold Equations began with frontman Drew Kohl writing cathartic songs late at night in his bedroom. Exploring dark themes while drawing from influences like Elliott Smith, Pavement and Johnny Marr, the clandestine songwriting operation had a lingering beauty in its melancholic wake. By 2022, Kohl (vocals and guitar) recruited John O’Brien (bass) and Ryan Dishen (drums) thus solidifying the current lineup of US-based Cold Equations. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Set The Boy Free’.
Following their single ‘Eraser’, Cold Equations shift to a toe-tapping joviality in the upbeat ‘Set The Boy Free’. Not necessarily a song that would have you jumping about dancing, there is a melancholic haunting in the melody. Yet, while ‘Set The Boy Free’ is not really a “jump up and get the party started” song, the moving arrangement will have you twirling about with careless abandon. Pounding drums, bold guitars and Kohl’s heartbreaking vocals blend in kaleidoscopic harmony sending tingles down your arms. It’s like those goosebumps you feel whenever hearing something exquisitely beautiful that touches you deep down in your soul.
A tribute to Johnny Marr and his autobiography Set The Boy Free, a book that played a pivotal role in the band’s formation, this ‘Set The Boy Free’ is filled with a strong sense of freedom. Touching on the relatable topic of letting go of someone or something you love, the track is hopeful, optimistic and a breath of relief no matter how difficult the situation can seem.
