Colby! – Gone To Bed (2024)

Just as music became a cathartic realm of solace for Colby! as a youngster, so she aims for people to feel the same sense of relief and escape from discouraging situations in her melodies. Surrounded by music as a child, it makes sense for Colby! to embrace and nurture her creativity; and by the age of 14, she began co-writing with her brother and producer RJ Johnson, a Berklee College of Music graduate. Her love of songwriting grew, and she found natural talent in sharing tales, ideas and relatable stories with poetic lyricism. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Gone To Bed’.

Following her well-received debut single ‘Don’t Know What To Say’, released in May this year, Colby! takes another step into 2024 with the track ‘Gone To Bed’. Similar to ‘Don’t Know What To Say’, this sophomore single showcases the US-based artist’s eclecticism and innovative take on pop music. Adopting bold beats with a powerful bass, shimmering synths, and a dynamic guitar, ‘Gone To Bed’ finds the link between indie-pop and alternative pop then captures its enigmatic nature with avant-garde tendencies.

The melody itself has an ear-catching originality, but it is Colby!’s vocals that add a spine-chilling quality. Wistful and light with a whimsical air, there is a hopeful lilt in the hazy soundscape; however, just as there is optimism, a rush of vulnerability oozes into the confident vocals. Binding elements of fragility with strength, a resilient obscurity lingers in ‘Gone To Bed’. Perfect considering the single expressing the duality of an intricate relationship.

With moving lyrics in a haunting bubble, ‘Gone To Bed’ explores the complexities of human emotion in relationships. Afraid of “liking each other too much” the individuals hold back. It is this caution that “keeps them from understanding where they stand… both believe the other deserves better, so they avoid bringing up their true feelings. Despite living in constant confusion and regret, they stay together always wishing they had ultimately expressed more…”

In addition to the single, Colby! released an official lyric video for ‘Gone To Bed’. You can view the video below or via her YouTube channel.
