Coconut Shy – Water, Water (2022)

If James Taylor and Ed Sheeran were to have a child, but it was raised by Jeff Buckley, the chances are it would be Coconut Shy. The brainchild of Australian singer-songwriter Joseph Mackey, Coconut Shy’s music has been described as genuine, moving and mesmerising. Already a hit among audiences and press alike, he has “…cemented himself with a breadth of warm and enticing offerings…” (The Real Ding). The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Water, Water’.

One of his personal favourites, Coconut Shy has performed ‘Water, Water’ consistently at his live sets with positive feedback. Considering his talent as an acoustic artist, it’s easy to see why audiences love his work. ‘Water, Water’ combines the intimate poetry of James Taylor with the contemporary flair of James Bay. His charming bold vocals meld beautifully with the acoustic guitar and drums highlighting the true beauty of simplistic soundscapes. In fact, this minimalistic approach has a calming starkness but also a kaleidoscopic twirl woven into the sonic tapestry.

Interestingly enough, while ‘Water, Water’ is an uplifting track with whimsical vibes, the song is extremely profound. Optimistic and empowering, but with a nostalgic melancholy flitting through the lyricism. Coconut Shy explains that ‘Water, Water’ is “a nostalgic and reminiscent track, but it doesn’t want to be. Sometimes I can’t resist the temptation to dwell in the past, on good times long gone. ‘Water, Water’ was sort of my way of looking myself in the mirror and saying: ‘hey man, the past is done. Let’s propel forward’…”

Following his well-received debut EP Japan Town, ‘Water, Water’ is Coconut Shy’s first release in 2022 – and what a release it is. Sincere, sentimental, tender and sophisticated, this talented artist turns your head with his smooth flow.
