Clyde Syde – Love Hate (2022)

While all relationships can have their ups and downs, the rollercoaster ride of a toxic relationship is something else entirely. The push and pull of a love-hate relationship has been captured by Clyde Syde in his aptly titled track ‘Love Hate’. Taking you to the high of being madly in love, only to drop you into the churning depths of anger and frustration, he straps you into the rollercoaster ride of the track with masterful ease.

Drawing on the musical inspiration of grunge greats, Syde brings a blast of emotion to situations most of us have either been in or seen others in. A solo artist, he writes, plays and produces his music by himself. While he took a break from music for a while, a Post Malone concert at the NEC Birmingham reignited his inspiration to make music.

‘Love Hate’ uses some grunge touches in the opening to slowly build into the heavy vibrations of the main melodic line. There is a thrumming tone in the low level of the track that vibrates through your chest like you are standing too close to a loudspeaker. This vibration is joined by a chittering tone that bounces off the deep beats. You can hear the influence of grunge in the melody as the darker emotions of the track make their way through your senses. The heaviness of the melody lightens as the track continues to bring the lighter emotions of a rollercoaster relationship to life. It is a really polished arrangement that shakes your insides to create the tension of the emotions, before lifting your spirits, only to drop you back down. While you are hit with both the highs and lows of the relationship in the melody, the darker emotions do seem more prominent.

The grunge edge of the melody is picked up by Syde’s vocals that slide into the soundscape with a delightful precision. Through the opening verse, he brings a twist of thoughts and emotions that fill you as you ride the emotions of a toxic relationship. He highlights all the things you do in a relationship to show you care, only to hit you in the chest with a moment of betrayal that leads to the lows of the relationship. The chorus has a really wonderful movement that makes you bop to the sound and want to sing along as the lyrics get stuck in your brain. While he is packing some intense emotions into each word, it is a really catchy performance that you will want to listen to again.

Clyde Syde compresses the intense emotions of a rollercoaster toxic relationship and pushes them into your chest through the addictive tones of ‘Love Hate’. The melody thrums with frustration and anger, only to lighten up for a sigh of happiness before heading back into the depths of negative emotions. His vocals draw you into one side of a toxic relationship while giving a human touch to all the emotions stirred by the music.
