Cloudshapes – Newborn (2022)

Described by Barstool UK as guys who are “…just brutally honest with their music”, and The Bear Internet Radio as writing “…music to energise people…”, Cloudshapes is an eclectic duo reaching deep into your soul, sending shivers down your spine and lifting you to a different sonic plain. The musical collaboration of singer-songwriter Jim Jagger and pianist-composer Rien De Keyser (who met while playing Ultimate Frisbee together), Cloudshapes draws together their diverse influences and experiences in an intriguing sound. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Newborn’.

Following their debut single ‘Holding Onto Life’ (released in 2021), ‘Newborn’ melds elements of indie-pop, alternative rock, hip-hop and tinges of melodic metal in the charming new track. Noted as a hard-hitting, heavy song with powerful guitars and pounding drums in the arrangement, the single is a bit of a punch in the face. The thing is the incorporation of light piano adds a softer side to ‘Newborn’. Moreover, the use of hip-hop/rap vocals seems to add a more realistic, brutally honest and raw side to ‘Cloudshapes’.

Not only is the melody intriguing but it elegantly flows as a representation of the theme – pure love. Cloudshapes explain that ‘Newborn’ is “…a love song about loving someone so much that you want to have a child with them and then having a child with them and the dreams and aspirations you have for that child as you hold them for the first time. The lyrics are inspired by observations of Rien and his wife’s relationship, the news of his new arrival and by Jim’s love for his wife and experiences of the birth of his two kids.”

Sincere, sentimental and introspective, Cloudshapes release their intimate single ‘Newborn’.
