Clay Joule – O’Dream (2022)

If you were to take a quick glance at singer-songwriter Clay Joule’s discography, you will find he is not one to merely make a pop song without any significance. From the issue of pet adoption in ‘Nothing like Loving You’ to the emotional experiences of living in lockdown with ‘REALM’, Joule embraces the complexities of life and connects with people via song. From Send Me Your Ears, The Metal Asylum, Illustrate Magazine, European Indie Music, The Hollywood Digest, Edgar All Poets and Senocular Media – to name but a few publications – Clay Joule is sharing important messages across the globe.

Not one to turn away from provocative themes, Joule’s single ‘O’Dream’ touches on the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. From the conflict’s “breakout” in February 2022, the international press has been reporting on the events of the Ukraine-Russia conflict exploring the fragility of all involved; Joule takes this one step further by looking at the human experience in an evocative and vulnerable song.

Penned, composed and produced in 2022 by Joule, ‘O’Dream’ has a brilliantly raw feeling to it. Nostalgic in its delivery, Joule finds a way to add classic rock vibes to a post-punk-esque vocal delivery. What I mean is, the instrumentation wraps Joule’s psychedelic voice with the dynamic drum and guitar (courtesy of Ukrainian guitarist Alex Gusinsky) melody. I find this intriguing as it appears to represent the emotional experience of individuals in this humanitarian crisis – vulnerability trapped within a rough exterior.
