Clay Joule – Cup of Joe (2024)
Man must fear evil men but there is a greater evil that must be feared most and that is the indifference of good men. An inspiring quote from The Boondock Saints and overwhelmingly true in these times of unrest. Truthfully, evil has been present since the dawn of time; however, sitting back and doing nothing, not even thinking about it perpetuates the bad stuff. Clay Joule is not one of the indifferent. Using his artistry, singer-songwriter Joule weaves insight into his moving melodies. From pet adoption to political activism, he ignites vulnerable hopefulness in our souls.
Following his well-received singles ‘Keep On’, ‘Ricordi’ and ‘Crazy’, Clay Joule ended 2023 with the powerful ‘Cup of Joe’. In ‘O Dream’, Joule captured the emotional experiences of those in the Ukraine-Russia war; but ‘Cup of Joe’ steps beyond this specific context to explore international conflict and strife. Using the metaphorical “cup of joe” – American slang for a cup of coffee – Joule dips into the connection of individuals dealing with global struggles.
Not a song about literal coffee, ‘Cup of Joe’ promotes the finding of a “middle group where differing opinions can coexist without causing offence…” Sitting around a metaphorical table drinking the energising coffee, leaders can hopefully find a temporary solution “acknowledging that diverse perspectives stem from unique life experiences and granting everyone the freedom to express and vote for their ideas…” One can only hope this gathering around a cuppa could make a change.
From a melodic standpoint, ‘Cup of Joe’ is a seemingly simplistic blast of indie-rock. While a united whole, each instrument brings its own prominent sound to the mix – a perfect expression of diverse opinions and perspectives reaching a harmonious end. Closing with a bold guitar riff and crescendo in Joule’s powerful vocals, ‘Cup of Joe’ leaves with both vulnerable pleading and glistening hopefulness.
In addition to the single, Clay Joule released an official music video for ‘Cup of Joe’. You can view the video below or on Joule’s YouTube channel. Please note that this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
