Classtronaut – Chemical Reaction (2024)

While the US-based group Classtronaut intoxicates audiences with grin-inducing waves of psychedelic indie-pop, its origins are darker. After his son was diagnosed with a rare genetic illness, co-founder Brian Fortson found himself spending many nights “sleeping on small couches, squeezed tightly in the corner of dark hospital rooms…” and, as you can imagine, it took an emotional toll; his outlet: pouring all emotions in music.

This might be my introduction to Classtronaut, but they reach audiences far beyond their Idaho borders granting solace, joy, and just some music for the deep breath at the end of a hard day. The most recent addition to their discography is the double single, ‘Chemical Reaction/ Gee Whiz’. Join us as we jump into the track ‘Chemical Reaction’.

There are bands whose music is heard, and there are those whose music must be felt and experienced; Classtronaut is the latter. Standing on a sonic beach staring out into the ocean, ‘Chemical Reaction’ is the cool breeze caressing your skin with a breath of life-giving air. Then again, just as it is a light-hearted brush of tranquillity, the concoction of bold keyboards, powerful drums, and soaring guitar glimmers in the oncoming wave of kaleidoscopic water – not scary, but rather filled with excitement. Treading along the sand, ripples of the ocean glide across your feet with gentle calm, yet the flood is imminent and a great crash leaves you in a haze of soul-stirring sound.

Upbeat, sincere, tender and relaxing, ‘Chemical Reaction’ grabs your heart with optimism and hope, but there is far more beneath the glistening surface. Within the layers of psychedelic instruments and hushed vocals, poignant profoundness lingers. In an intricate weaving of sound and emotion, ‘Chemical Reaction’ captures raw vulnerability, melancholy and the need for escapism during challenging times.

Resilience, hope and a sense of understanding, ‘Chemical Reaction’ is Classtronaut sharing the core of their existence with us… The chemical reaction of loss, love and mutual acceptance lay in a blazing symphony of insightful music.
