Clare Easdown – Your Eyes Are Ice (2022)

Attraction and desire can be extremely powerful pulls that draw you toward someone, but what happens when this power goes wrong? This is what Clare Easdown considers in her single ‘Your Eyes Are Ice’. Through the dark-pop track, she looks at feelings of pure lust and desire that have the same power as a drug, only to spiral into darker themes as the power of attraction takes a terrible turn.

While there is a slight edge of power imbalance in the track, the single carries the message that all people are equal and can feel this deep form of attraction. A relatable track, it not only looks at the darkness of desire, but also showcases just what Easdown has to offer. After learning classical cello at a young age, she moved on to music production and draws on everyday experiences for her songs.

The dark edge of ‘Your Eyes Are Ice’ comes through in the deep tones of the opening. There is a chilled feeling to the melody as it laps against your senses, sending a shiver down your spine. While there is this chill to the bassline, there is something that draws you endlessly forward as you fall under the single’s spell. This is a beautiful sonic representation of desire and the draw of affection that you can’t get enough of. The addictive tones continue through the low levels of the melody while chittering higher tones add a new texture to the emotion. These notes dance across your skin, creating a contrast between the darkness and the bliss that comes with falling into your desires. It is a fantastic melody that captures your attention and holds it for the entire single.

As you are falling under the spell of the melody, Easdown’s vocals are a breathy whisper across your skin. Her performance bolsters the call of the melody, while offering a reflection on the darkness that surrounds you. It is a rather decadent performance that is velvety while carrying the lightest hint of the chill of the melody. Through the lyrics, she beckons you into the spiral of lust, before turning your attention to the point where the power of attraction goes wrong. At times, her vocals waver out into the melody, merging with the dark movement for a serpentine flow.

Clare Easdown taps into the darker side of attraction, lust and desire through the addictive, serpentine movements of ‘Your Eyes Are Ice’. The melody captures you from the first note, pulling you under its spell and not letting up for a second. Her vocal performance has a breathy edge to it as she has you spiralling into the darkness of the single.
