Clare Easdown – Rebel Hearts (2024)
Perceiving music like a “generous expanse of the sea”, Australia-based singer-songwriter Clare Easdown bravely jumped into the sonic ocean revelling in all its complexity and beauty. As a youngster, Easdown trained as a classical cellist; however, step ahead a few years and her passion for music grew to incorporate both composition and music production. Influenced by the likes of Madonna, Grimes and CHVRCHES, she trailed through electronica interwoven with silvery slices of pop and soul. Today we take a gander (or rather a listen) to her new single ‘Rebel Hearts’.
Following her well-received remix singles ‘I’ll Wait (Truz Remix)’ and ‘Scopolamine (Truz Remix)’, Easdown exits her comfort zone with the pop-punk tune ‘Rebel Hearts’. Being a rebel in some way, she diversifies her sound with absolute reckless abandon. Inspired by an introduction to punk bands like Riot Girl and Bikini Kill, ‘Rebel Hearts’ focuses on feelings in the chaos of rule-breaking. Clare Easdown explains:
“’Rebel Hearts’ at its very core is about being a complete misfit and being proud in doing so. It is about challenging what is expected of us in society. Turning what is expected of us upside down and then running with it in all its authenticity. ‘Rebel Hearts’ was created to help provide people with a safe space to explore their unique sides and revel in what is considered abnormal or on the fringe.”
Self-recorded and produced in “on the lounge suite in my humble home…”, ‘Rebel Hearts’ finds an intricate precision between raw grittiness and sophisticated maturity. A combination of crashing drums and soaring guitars join in harmonic unity lying beneath as a hard-hitting crunch of pop-punk. For me, however, it is the layering of Easdown’s vocals with a slip of gruff spoken word that makes ‘Rebel Hearts’, well, rebellious.
Distorted, obscure and slightly uncomfortable, ‘Rebel Hearts’ has punk grittiness clinging to the melody. Then again, just within the discomforting grit is a warm richness bringing a sense of solace to the chaos.
In addition to the single, Clare Easdown released an official music video for ‘Rebel Hearts’. You can view the video below and on her YouTube channel.
