CJB – Infidelity (2024)

Drawing together elements of Afrobeat, RnB, hip hop and a tinge of EDM beats, singer-songwriter CJB glides across genres with bold confidence. For approximately seven years, according to Spotify, the US-based artist has reached audiences across the globe with his 2017 debut track ‘Fade Away’ to 2023’s ‘Cynical’. This is my introduction to CJB, but he has already turned heads beyond his native US borders to Germany, Brazil, the UK, Australia, France and more.

Inspired by artists like Drake and Juice WRLD, CJB’s music leans toward the realm of hip-hop and pop; however, while there is a slight reminiscence, CJB’s style retains a distinctive signature. Yet, despite the distinctiveness of his music, the themes and concepts remain universal – tackling life and love in a confusing world. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Infidelity’.

Following his well-received single ‘Cynical’, and the two remixes, ‘Infidelity’ is CJB’s first release of 2024. While the tinge of RnB and pop heard in ‘Cynical’ makes an appearance in ‘Infidelity’, the new single leans further toward an Afrobeat style with an African flair to the melody. As a synth-driven melody, a haziness flutters across a kaleidoscopic bubble wrapping about your body with a rich warmth. The thing is, just as it is dreamy, a bold beat pierces the tune adding a rough EDM edge to ‘Infidelity’.

Yes, the melody is one to ensnare your senses and intoxicate but it is CJB’s vocals that both elevate the tune and harness the core of its theme. Slight grittiness matches soulful vocals in an Afrobeat vibe granting a sense of soothing in the single. Interestingly, just as there is soothing in ‘Infidelity’, CJB again tackles the disastrous realm of relationships. He explains:

“This song is for the times you mess up, even though you mean well. It’s about wanting to be a good person but realising that not everybody’s perfect. I hope listeners can connect with the honesty and vulnerability in this track, even if they haven’t been in the same situation.”
