CJ Jarratt – Bad For My Teeth (2025)
We came across CJ Jarratt a few years ago with the single ‘My Darlin’’, and I remember thinking – yep, all that time ago – that this musician was onto something. Nostalgic but refreshingly contemporary, the simplistic pop-tinged song tugged at my heart with honest sincerity. Taking a step back for a while, the UK-based singer-songwriter took time to explore and hone his sound. After a three-year absence, Jarratt returns to the music scene – or at least the streaming side of things – with his new single, ‘Bad For My Teeth’.
Bringing back memories of old-school McFly and Good Charlotte, ‘Bad For My Teeth’ is a shove to the days of 90s pop-rock. With full-bodied pop-rock-y goodness, crashing drums meet soaring guitars, a bold bass and a shimmering keyboard peeking from the back – rhythmic, harmonic, and stuffed with the fun of yesteryear. Hard-hitting and toe-tapping, you can easily find yourself pumping your fist, jumping about, and singing along even if you don’t really know the words. Yet, as much as it is packed with contagious fun, there is a more profound flip side to the track.
Like a chocolate that tastes so good but is seriously terrible for your dental hygiene, Jarratt explores the tougher aspects of sugary-sweet romance. A juxtaposition between vulnerable lyricism and heartening sounds, ‘Bad For My Teeth’ brims with profoundness even if you think it’s just a cute song. Jarratt explains:
“This song is for anyone who needs to realise that their relationship might not be good for them. It’s a hard thing to admit to yourself, but maybe if this song resonates with you, it might help you ask some big questions about whether you’re with the right person or not.”
Sincere, reflective, sentimental and honest, CJ Jarratt dissects difficult relationships in an intricate blend of carefree joviality and challenging introspection with ‘Bad For My Teeth’. I sometimes worry that artists peak with a debut, then fall from grace; I doubt this is the case with CJ Jarratt. Time will tell, but I recommend we follow him on this exciting journey.
