Ci Gofod – Rhedeg Yn Y Nos (2023)
Wales – a country of magic, mystery, Welsh cakes, an odd language, gorgeous accents, Rhod Gilbert, Steve and Gethan Jones, and singing ‘Bread of Heaven’ at rugby matches. Beautiful with a charming wonderment, there is something special about Wales and the Welsh that is difficult to put into words, but I’ll do my best. Come with me as we delve into the sonic bubble of Welsh artist Ci Gofod.
Featured on Music Scene Wales, Plastic Magazine, Amplify The Noise, BBC Radio Wales, Iggy Magazine, Mystic Sons, Chromatic Club, and various playlists, Ci Gofod is reaching audiences beyond his UK borders. The brainchild of singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jack Thomas Davies, Ci Gofod is funky, soulful and eclectic. A nostalgic familiarity exists in his funk and soul-rock sounds dragging us back to the days of Wild Cherry and Earth, Wind and Fire; however, an edginess is evident showing reminiscence to Super Furry Animals and Radiohead.
Known for their natural musical talent (think Tom Jones, Luke Evans and Charlotte Church), the Welsh seem to have an effortless elegance slicing through their sounds. I naively believe that the Welsh were born singing because, well, they all know how to hold a note, but I know I’m probably incorrect. Yet, Ci Gofod proves my point of their being born singing with a penchant for obscure, innovative musical skills in his new single ‘Rhedeg Yn Y Nos’.
Following his single ‘Digital Conversation’, ‘Rhedeg Yn Y Nos’ (translated into ‘Running At Night’) is Ci Gofod’s first release in two years. A bilingual artist, Ci Gofod incorporates an element of his cultural heritage into his melodies, which is heard in the lyrics of ‘Rhedeg Yn Y Nos’. A spattering of Welsh words in a toe-tapping, hard-hitting funk song with groovy vibes, ‘Rhedeg Yn Y Nos’ have you wondering what the hell he’s saying but not really caring as you sit back, put your hands behind your head and enjoy the power of the single.
Moving and passionate from the first beat, Ci Gofod pulls you into a warm embrace with ‘Rhedeg Yn Y Nos’. Yet, just as it is a comforting warmth in the song, a sense of cheekiness exists in the tune. The combination of guitars and drums set the foundation for a mischievous track, and Ci Gofod’s bold vocals add the raised eyebrow and lopsided grin – it’s that trouble you know you shouldn’t follow but can’t help heading to the dancefloor as he weaves his magical musical spell.
