Christian Wethered – Mon Petit Jardin (2021)

If Leonard Cohen and Lana Del Rey were to have a lovechild, but it was adopted by Bob Dylan, then Christian Wethered would be it. Based in Dublin, Ireland, the young singer-songwriter places poetic lyricism atop intimate melodies. Featured in Buzz Music, Breaking Tunes, Hot Press and several playlists, Wethered is gaining recognition on an international level. The latest addition to his evolving discography is ‘Mon Petit Jardin’.

Following the folk-inspired singles ‘Mr Medicine Man’ and ‘Way Back’, ‘Mon Petit Jardin’ is a melancholic merging of folk, soul and jazz. Exposing elements of heartache, longing, isolation and anxiety, the single is a sonic representation of broken hearts. While there is a strong folk-influenced poetry in ‘Mon Petit Jardin’, the acoustic guitar adds a more vulnerable quality to the tune. Moreover, the fragile combination of simplistic instrumentation and broken vocals increase the intensity of the concept. Written a few years ago, ‘Mon Petit Jardin’ is a soul-stirring ode to lost love. Incorporating French into a predominantly English song, Wethered shows his eclectic innovativeness by adding another dimension to the awesome track.

“The song is about the experience of being dumped while taking on the two sides of a breakup. Some of the lyrics are in French, so it has two languages working together, two nationalities in tangent. I’m telling the story of the breakup while experiencing it, flipping between the past and the present.” – Christian Wethered on ‘Mon Petit Jardin’

Originally captured on film as part of The Killiney Hill Sessions – a series of films based around performances by Christian Wethered – the single is masterfully portrayed in an acoustic performance hidden in a desolate forest. Yet, while the song has a mark of desolation, desperation and dismay in the execution and film set, Wethered adds lingering empowerment knowing the love affair is over irrespective of how much we analyse it.
