Chris Saunders – Countdown (2022)
Growing up in a musical household, singer-songwriter Chris Saunders began studying the piano, trumpet and flute; however, he found his musical soul in the guitar influenced by Bob Marley, Eric Clapton, and later on Oasis and Eagle Eye Cherry. In 2010, Saunders founded a genre-defying band called Eleventh Ward that went on to establish itself as a name in the New York music scene. Skip forward about 8 or 9 years and we see (or rather hear) Saunders embracing a solo project with the release of his full-length album Liquid Therapy. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Countdown’.
The first release in two years, ‘Countdown’ follows the well-received track ‘Palace of Marbles’. Unlike the soothing, pop ballad-esque design of ‘Palace of Marbles’, ‘Countdown’ has an upbeat, high-paced hip-hop style to its sound. Known for his versatility as an artist, the US-based New York native effortlessly merges hip-hop with pop and slight tinges of funk in the background. Tossing you into a sonic whirlpool twirling about within a kaleidoscopic swirl, Saunders both sends you on a rollercoaster journey but guides you through the organised chaos. Add the backing vocals of Tihane and you have a song made for the masses.
Recorded with producer Segnon, another New York native who moved to Los Angeles, the single was created at Bill Wither’s studio (Segnon was residing at Bill Withers’ old house). With a strong musical aura, the studio prompted creativity, spurred excitement, and helped them create something completely unique. Saunders shares that “Segnon usually creates the music and I write the lyrics, but this was really a combination of both of us writing and producing this song. Both of us being New Yorkers, Segnon moving to LA and me visiting LA really gave life to this song about a New Yorker transitioning to West Coast…under the veil of a woman who draws them there…”
Filled with passion, power and sincere sentimentality, New Yorker Chris Saunders releases his new single ‘Countdown’.
