Chloe Mayse – Mad In Love (2023)

A prominent figure and advocate in the Toronto queer community, Chloe Mayse is a pillar of strength, acceptance and empowerment – but, as with most people, it wasn’t always this way. Embracing her passion for music as a toddler, Mayse began singing at age 2, playing the guitar at age 10, and writing songs at 15. The songwriting helped her reach beyond her feelings of turmoil and frustration to self-acceptance.

From her debut single ‘Come Here With Me’, Mayse has a way of connecting with others and turning heads across the globe simultaneously. In 2014, she won a singing competition with a YouTube video submission, and this led to a major highlight in her life (not to mention her music career) – singing backup for Tegan and Sara at the Juno Awards. Mayse is greatly influenced by these prominent queer musicians so, seriously, it was amazing to work with them. Taking on her skills from the experience, her passion for music and a desire to help people heal, she releases her new single ‘Mad In Love’.

Following her sophomore track ‘Two Weeks’, ‘Mad In Love’ is Chloe Mayse’s third single and first of 2023. She shares that each song she writes is like a diary entry, so you can imagine how personal these tracks are. ‘Mad In Love’ explores her feelings about her first serious relationship looking at the intricate elements of romance laced with mental health issues. Mayse explains:

“I fell in love with a great friend of mine, and we had a beautiful love story that lasted 3 years. I was so infatuated and deeply in love to the point of making her my sole purpose in life. I was switching back and forth between a manic and depressive state, and the only thing that felt stable and secure to me was when we were together.”

Just as the lyrical content and theme are profound and intricate, the melody offers as much complexity but in a subtle way. Slight hints of jazz flutter through a pop sound with dashes of indie-rock dipping into the song. The steady drums and strong bassline bring strength to the single while a charming guitar carries us along. For me, however, it is the obscurity of Mayse’s alto vocals pricked by interspersed, hushed horns that give ‘Mad In Love’ an edge.

In addition to the single, Chloe Mayse released a music video for ‘Mad In Love’. You can view the video below or via her YouTube channel.
