Chloe Mayse – HIGH SCHOOL (2024)
Music means many things to people. It can be an entertaining tune to blast on the radio and swirl about in blissful joy. It might be a nostalgic link to days gone by – both good and bad. For singer-songwriter Chloe Mayse (and many who listen to her tunes), music is a catharsis, a place of solace, and a guiding light for self-discovery and expression. Living in a world of contradiction, uncertainty and challenges, reality isn’t always that great, but music is always there capturing emotions in all its glory. The latest addition to Chloe Mayse’s discography is her single ‘HIGH SCHOOL’.
High school – a trying time for many, and particularly difficult if you are “different” in some ways. For Mayse, ‘HIGH SCHOOL’ encapsulates the struggle of identifying and then dealing with one’s sexuality as a 15-year-old teenager. Continuing tales of relationships and love, ‘HIGH SCHOOL’ steps further back than her previous track ‘Mad In Love’ touching on Mayse’s first crush. Mayse explains:
“’HIGH SCHOOL’ is based on my experience of going to an all-girls Catholic school. It’s my ‘coming out’ song – the one I wish I could have released at 15. I was closeted when it came to my sexuality and wasn’t confident enough to tell my friend that I was in love with her. I had these intense feelings and at the same time was trying so hard to keep it all a secret from everyone…”
Known for her cool, soft, gentle voice, Mayse sings her way into your heart with a calm, smooth and soothing tone; however, as with the melody, there is a juxtaposition – no, rather an ebb and flow of raw emotion and charming warmth. A pop-inspired single, the tune uses a combination of drumbeats layered with a humming guitar but the lingering piano highlights pain and sincere understanding.
Penned as a diary entry, the narrative is intimate, intricate and, as I mentioned, soothing caressing you in rich sonic hugs. Yet, the shift between happiness and vulnerability perfectly captures that “I love you and want to be with you but it’s too painful to be different so I will suffer in silence” attitude.
In addition to the single, Chloe Mayse released an official music video for ‘HIGH SCHOOL’. You can view the video below or on her YouTube channel.
