Chino the Kid – Patience (2021)
With his debut single ‘Patience’, Chino the Kid has you sinking into a dreamy and contemplative headspace. Drawing on the rather niche sounds of Cantopop, he reinterprets the tones and wraps them in a more western style. Using only an old Technics U-60 to create the sounds of the melody, he gives us a taste of what he has to offer.
While the single taps into the Cantonese pop styles of the 80s and 90s in South East Asia, Chino the Kid also draws on his own classical beginnings. Having learnt to play the piano and tabla at a young age, he started to pick up other instruments as time went on. Now, he is ready to share his music with the world through his bedroom-pop recordings.
‘Patience’ captures your senses with an intense beat before the vibrating keys make an appearance. The keys have this wonderful organ vibe that brings a heady dreaminess to your ears. The flow of the melody has an easiness with a touch of nostalgia that is wonderful to hear. The Cantopop influence can be heard through the arrangement but it has been woven into something a bit more western. The softness of the melody allows you to slip into a floating headspace where you can really take the lyrics in.
Chino the Kid’s vocals have a more contemplative edge to them which works wonderfully with the dreaminess of the music. His voice has an earthy poetry to it that gives you some grounding against the floating haze of the melody. The rise and fall of his performance enhances the vibe of the melody while you slip into the lyrics. There is a lot for you to think about woven into the lyrics and it is worth taking the time to really listen to them. The melodic interludes also provide you with the time to sit back and think while letting the music wash over you.
Chino the Kid brings a delightful mixture of dreamy tones and Cantopop to your ears in the heady sounds of ‘Patience’. As the melody lifts you into a floating headspace, his vocals give you something to think about. The combination is a wonder to listen to while the melody leads you through the overall poetry of the single.
