Che Arthur – No Harbor (2024)
With over three decades of experience in the music industry, I think we can say that Che Arthur is a well-versed musical veteran. It is this experience and knowledge that is a testament to his outstanding skills and enhances his natural talent as an artist. This is my introduction to Che Arthur, but he has reached audiences since the 1990s with a confident stage presence and charming vocals. Performing with Pink Avalanche, Atombombpocketknife, and Universal Life and Accident, Arthur is a well-known guitarist; however, it is his solo project that captures my interest.
Inspired by life in its totality from gritty darkness to light joviality, US-based Che Arthur expresses everything in his music. Reaching across the spectrum from inner demons and turmoil to empowerment and hopefulness, Arthur connects with audiences – particularly in his live shows. He notes: “I’ve learned that one of the few things I can do to help keep myself above water mentally is to leave my house and play my songs in front of people…” Yet, while he ensnares the senses of live audiences, his heartfelt themes and personal narratives exist in his released material. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘No Harbor’.
Following the 20th Anniversary Remaster of his debut album All Of Your Tomorrows Were Decided Today, Arthur shifts from post-punk grittiness to a darker brand of grunge in ‘No Harbor’. Breathing nostalgia into a ‘No Harbor’, Arthur drags you back to the 1990s but incorporates an edgy modern-day vibe beneath the vintage melody. His gritty vocals squeeze elements of punk in the guitar-driven grunge, once again reaching toward old-school depth in a contemporary tone. Interestingly, this nostalgic flair showcases Arthur’s sophistication as an artist hitting the theme of ‘No Harbor’ through the song. A theme that details ageing in the music industry, the isolation and feelings of despair living in a world where youth is emphasised. Arthur explains:
“The guitar and my voice are the most direct means I have to deal with demons. So, when I say I made this record in an attempt to stay alive, I’m not exaggerating… That’s the reason I wrote this… – so that I could get some of those thoughts and feelings out of myself and use the tools I have… to communicate with people.”
