Chay Snowdon – Are You Sitting Comfortably? (Then We’ll Begin)

Whatever happened to power-pop? You know, Cheap Trick, Dwight Twilley, The Knack kind of power-pop? Die-hard fans have no worries, it is still around; maybe it just mutated a bit and got a bit more power compared to the pop part. Think Foo Fighters and they are certainly making a big splash. It just seems that new forces were coming a bit too few and far between, even though a bit of extra energy in rock music was always needed. But, then, listening to Chay Snowdown’s EP Are You Sitting Comfortably? (Then We’ll Begin), there should be no worries. They are here, they are loud, but they haven’t forgotten a good melody along the way.

This quartet from South West of England has their guitar-oriented power-pop chops down to a pat as they have been around for ages. The seven tracks here ooze with confidence and assuredness. They’ve got all those 70s tricks from all the power-pop, glam and proto-punk bands stuck them in the blender and came up with music perfect for that open window car ride. The instrumental is quite complemented with Chay’s vocals that have a charming warble akin to that of Pavlov Dog’s David Surkamp, only a bit lower in range, giving the whole sound a bit of a special tone.

But, is there a problem here? Sure, you just get compelled to press that repeat button over and over.
