Chasing Felix – MEXICO (2022)
Chasing Felix are finally bouncing back after the devastating €5000 rig robbery they suffered in 2018. Their comeback single ‘MEXICO’, complete with music video, is inspired by frontman Damien Fegan’s attempts at finding his feet on the dating scene after a breakup. While dipping into the world of dating, the single looks at the experience many people have, thinking they have found the one, only for things to turn out very differently.
While the band has faced a serious setback in their musical journey, Fegan, Gavin Doyle, Peter Dzvonik and Matheus Costa are not letting anything stop them unleashing their music on the world. After investing in rebuilding their entire rig, they return to the scene not only with this single, but a headline at The Workman’s Cellar. The performance on 18 March was much anticipated and packed the venue to capacity, showing that their fans have not forgotten them.
‘MEXICO’ slowly reaches out to you and leads you into the shivering movement of the drums. There is an almost otherworldly feeling to the opening melody that transports you into a new world. The music has a rich heat to it that settles on your skin and gets you a little addicted to the sound. At times, the music is soft and rich, only to rise lightly into a dreamier movement. As the single progresses, the horns that twirl through the soundscape bring a rather euphoric feeling with them. This swirls into the hazy wisps of the main melodic line for a floating feeling that you can’t help but give into.
While the music settles around you and draws you into the floating current, the vocals are airy and feel like they are coming from a great distance. There is an echo and layering to the vocals that rides the waves and warmth created by the music. The delivery enhances the floating vibes of the music while dipping into the dating scene. The lyrics bring the uncertainty that comes with hitting the dating scene again, only to turn into the ember of warmth that comes when you make a new connection.
Chasing Felix drops you into the warmth of ‘MEXICO’ as it catches you in the mellow melodic flow and dips into finding your feet on the dating scene. From the first note, the music has a hazy warmth that settles on your skin and has you floating down the single. The vocals echo and reach out from a distance, while touching on the emotions of dating again after a breakup.
