Charlotte Lansman – Stupid Love (2023)
Sitting at the core of Charlotte Lansman’s music is the joy of being in love. An emotional transmission of those blissful moments when you are oblivious to the world, Lansman has a way of taking you on that sublime journey. Yet, love isn’t all sunshine and daisies as she touches on a situation when her boyfriend left her in ‘Water’; but, overall, her music is a radiant expression of happiness. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Stupid Love’.
Following the jazz-filled vivacity of her 2021 single ‘Lost’, ‘Stupid Love’ is the UK-based artist’s first release in two years. Returning to the UK music scene, Lansman merges elements of Amy Winehouse and Sade in her new single. Recorded and produced with Joe Rodwell, ‘Stupid Love’ tips its hat to old-school jazz with sensuality flowing through the melody. Just as there is a retro vibe, a contemporary neo-soul flutters in the soft keys, warm guitar and harmonic slice of jazz drums.
A nostalgic whiff of the iconic Amy Winehouse is clear in ‘Stupid Love’ in the melody and Lansman’s off-kilter vocals; however, a tinge of something special slips in as the guitar adds a groovy world vibe with obscure notes punctuating the track. I might compare this to George Benson with its melding of rich warmth and bold flair as the soul-inspired sound binds it in a swirl of vibrant music.
As I mentioned, love is at the core of Charlotte Lasman’s music, and ‘Stupid Love’ gets you grinning with the heat of new love. Sliding along in its sensual nature, the single is a slick sonic vision of those first moments when you’re about to fall hopelessly. Lansman explains, “The single is a celebration of those feelings and times when you’re falling in love, and you just can’t help feeling deliriously happy about it.”
Taken off her upcoming debut EP, set for release in early 2024, ‘Stupid Love’ is a sincere, sentimental, laidback vision of love.
