Charlotte Hall – Telepathy (2022)
Charlotte Hall has hooked us again and again with the intensity and intimacy of her music from ‘The Wolves’ to ‘Squeeze’. She is continuing this trend with her single ‘Telepathy’, which delves into a controlling relationship. Drawing on her own experience with a relationship like this, she encourages us to stand up to unfair treatment and fight for what is right.
Through the single, she draws us into the moment she realised she had been lied to and had her trust broken. From this point, she considers the realisation that she needs to exit this relationship and the controlling person needs her more than she needs them. This is a message that has been artfully woven into the single, along with a pillar of strength, letting you know that it is less scary to leave than you might imagine.
‘Telepathy’ slowly builds through the opening with a shivering electronic tone. The more melodic notes rise on the back of that shivering before the beats tap into life. There is a deep feeling to the beats that gets your foot tapping away with their rhythm. The guitars layer over these beats, before the electronic tones overtake the higher levels and bring a wave of sound like the Northern Lights leading you to the horizon. There is a great synthwave touch to the melody that is tempered by a more organic movement. This layering is wonderfully handled as it catches you up in the movement and has you hooked to the sound. Later in the track, the drums start to really roll before the guitar riff rises through your chest. This is like a moment of freedom soaring through your senses.
While the melody has you hooked to the single, Hall’s vocals are unapologetic and honest as they lay out the story of the track. She confronts the controlling person through the lyrics, letting out everything she wants to say to them. There is a slightly reflective vibe to her performance as she looks back on the relationship and what happened. While confrontational, the lyrics have a delicacy to them that takes the high road of the situation. Later in the track, the vocals are layered with three distinct lines overlapping. This is a wonderful sonic device that adds depth to the single.
Charlotte Hall reflects on controlling relationships, while providing the strength needed to leave them in ‘Telepathy’. The melody shivers to life before blending organic tones with synths for a really addictive movement. Hall’s vocals are tender and honest as she confronts the controlling person before rising with freedom.
