Charlie Higgins & Sunset Station – Suzannah (2022)
Blending elements of rock ‘n’ roll, country, soul, Americana and folk, Charlie Higgins & Sunset Station is a toe-tapping genre-traversing band. Bringing the talents of singer-songwriter Charlie Higgins, Manu Areola (bass), Xavier Olazabal (drums), and frequent collaborator David Yuter (keys), this US-based band is one not to be pigeon-holed. Featured on various playlists/radio streaming services, such as iHeart Radio, the lads are reaching a global audience. The latest addition to their discography is the single ‘Suzannah’.
Following their debut EP Gringo, ‘Suzannah’ is a slice of old-school folk brushed with contemporary folk-pop vibes. A reminiscence can be made to Paul Simon with the soft, direct lyricism; however, the sensual trombone interwoven into the melody makes a sound that is quite distinctive. It is this trombone that brings a slight jazz tone to the track making the heartache just that little bit – but in a good way. Not a jovial song, but not a melancholic one either, Charlie Higgins & Sunset Station find the delicate balance between the two – along with a soothing, flowing melodic charm.
Tender and moving, Charlie Higgins’ vocals eloquently capture the intimate connection between people in ‘Suzannah’. Drawing on his storytelling abilities, he shares the meeting of two individuals and the development of a strong connection before one has to leave. Higgins explains that this is “the story of a re-encounter at a Canadian dive bar between a guy and a girl born in the same town, in the same hospital, just two years apart. She’s travelled the world and made a name for herself, while he’s your classic failure to launch. They experience a brief and strong connection before she decides she has to go and ‘never looked back as she walked out into the empty night’.”
