Charlie Freeman – Lost Town (2023)

Described as “rock and roll of the best kind…” (Audiofuzz), singer-songwriter Charlie Freeman finds the line between vintage and modern-day rock. In 2018, UK-based Freeman released his debut album Truth to critical acclaim with rave reviews and a regular spot on BBC Radio. Skip ahead a few years and Freeman has reached far beyond his UK borders with several singles and his sophomore album Love, touching on life, love and loss. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Lost Town’.

After a time of travelling, meeting new people and drawing inspiration from his adventurous journey, Freeman returns with the 80s-tinged soft rock single ‘Lost Town’. Setting you adrift on a smooth sonic river, Freeman’s new single is soft, gentle and soothing. Soft guitars and twinkling keyboards add a perfumed whimsy to the sonic journey with crashing drums fluttering about. I find it interesting that while the drums have a pounding beat, they add to the hushed mellifluous nature of ‘Lost Town’ instead of clashing with it. Even more interesting is how the combination of these instruments elegantly captures the core of the single.

Freeman explains that ‘Lost Town’ “is a song about journeying through those long nights of the soul. Digging out the darkness and out the other side to freedom”. Emotional and tender, the rich wave of warmth, light and wistful joy is the freedom, and the dark tumultuous depth beneath the river is the darkness of our soul. With soulful vocals, Freeman pulls us out of any hopeless despair to reach that warm freedom – like a shining silver thread pulsating through any mires of doom bringing you to a fresh breath of life.

Taken from his upcoming album Freedom, ‘Lost Town’ is a sincere, sentimental, innovative and honest trap of emotions in a melodic wrapper. I cannot wait for more from this talented musician.
