Charlie Clark – No Big Deal Single Review

Is Charlie Clark one of the artists that are bringing back the 90s revival? In particular, the revival of one of the better streams in 90s music begun by Guided By Voices, Dinosaur Jr., and that band’s off-shot Sebadoh? Well, judging by his latest single, ‘No Big Deal’, he seems to be doing so and doing it oh so well. Actually, Clark picks up on the great melody part of all of the above-mentioned artists without eschewing that characteristic guitar sound.

Starting out as part of Glasgow’s quartet Astrid, Clark has been a proactive presence in the underground music scene for over two decades. He has also been a part of the Scottish supergroup The Reindeer Section and had other solo projects like Broken Arrow and MJ12, as well as guesting with such renowned and revered names as Mogwai, Arab Strap, and Snow Patrol. All that is evident in the power pop-like (with the accent on power) strength of ‘No Big Deal’ with Clark giving his 90s tendencies quite an up-to-date veneer – and it was just Clark and his regular collaborator and producer Jason Shaw (Cambodian Space Project). Clark notes that “it really was just the two of us. Recorded really quickly with few overdubs.”

The lyrics to the song are intriguing themselves and Clark points out this about them: “I figured I’d covered rock ’n’ roll and drugs with the previous singles so this is the sex part. I’ll leave it to the listener to figure it out! I wanted to have a really short full-on pop track with hardly anything on it…”

In addition to the single, Charlie Clark released an official music video for ‘No Big Deal’. You can view the video below or on his official YouTube channel.
