Chapell – Suddenly (2024)

Known for exceptional storytelling skills, enthusiastic musicality and that astounding way of drawing others into another universe through art, singer-songwriter Chapell captivates listeners, shares profound themes and is quickly leaving a stamp on the music industry saying, “This is me, I made a difference”. Described as a “cultural alchemist”, US-based Chapell carefully weaves together diverse cultures, genres and generational styles in his insatiably moving music. He first hit our ears in 2022 with the singles ‘Wave As You Walk Past’ and ‘Gold’ – both taken from his critically acclaimed album Two Fishes. Along with an international fanbase, we are eager to tackle his latest single ‘Suddenly’. Join us, won’t you?

The first release in two years, ‘Suddenly’ has Chapell sweeping into 2024 with an old-school brand of 90s/early 2000s indie-rock. A nostalgic whisper of Coldplay and Snow Patrol drip from ‘Suddenly’ taking me back about 20 years – can’t believe ‘Yellow’ is over two decades old. A warm comforting feeling wiggles about your head and gut wrapped in sentimental wistfulness; however, there is a contemporary edginess bringing a modern-day tinge to the track. Interestingly, despite the moving reminiscence to older indie-rock bands, a complete uniqueness exists in Chapell’s work – primarily the obscurity of his vocals and the intriguing arrangement.

Performed by multi-instrumentalist Chapell, ‘Suddenly’ has a steady foundation from the outset with bold bass and a steady drumbeat. Once the shimmering keyboards bring an 80s vibe, they are met by a dynamic 90s guitar grabbing two distinctive decades together in a single melody. The sliver of Lorenza Ponce’s violin is intriguing because it inserts the ever-present haunting of a violin yet keeps in line with the warm, rich, comfortable essence of ‘Suddenly’.

While Chapell’s melodies are laidback with an “easy to listen to” sound perfect as a singalong piece when driving through traffic, the lyricism highlights the depth of his music. ‘Suddenly’ explores the message of inspiration, hope and optimism felt in meaningful connections. Meeting the desire to be understood, accepted and overall loved by another individual. In his own words, “having someone give a shit when they don’t have to is priceless…”
