Celestial North – Yarrow (2022)
Taking the time to enjoy nature can help us settle our thoughts and work through any issues that we face. This is something that Celestial North knows all too well and has channelled into her atmospheric single ‘Yarrow’. Using a combination of instrumentation and records of natural sounds, she draws us into a meditative and reflective state of mind.
The single came to her as she was meditating next to a yarrow patch in her garden, trying to work through the frustration she was feeling. Showcasing a different side of her musical skills, the single sinks its roots into the natural world while swaying with a wash of piano and sighing vocals. A tantalising teaser for her next album which is being released later this year, the single will have you feeling relaxed and more at peace than when it started.
The tender touch of the piano that opens ‘Yarrow’ brings the first threads of relaxation and a sense of natural wonder to the single. Through the movement of the piano, you can feel the stress and strain of the world washing off your shoulders and the tension in your muscles relaxing. Beneath the piano line, is a rush of sound that reminds you of the sweep of water, further chasing your problems away. After this initial release of stress, the melody drops only to rise with glittering tones that bring a sense of golden light to your mind. The piano line is truly stunning on this track as it draws you into the meditative atmosphere. Complemented by the softer tones in the lower levels of the melody, the piano line takes your mind on a journey far from the rush of the real world. Over all of this, there is an almost ethereal choir sighing with a feeling of contentment.
Around the halfway point, the music gains a grounded feeling through the drums that create a solid foundation beneath your feet. While you have been floating on the atmospheric easiness of the piano, this newer grounded touch brings a new sense of nature to the single. You can almost smell the loamy scent of soil through the movement as it connects you with the Earth and offers the peace that only comes from being with nature. The choral vocals move from their contented sighs and seem to push you further into the soundscape while continuing to hold you in a floating space.
Meditative, relaxing, atmospheric and gentle, ‘Yarrow’ by Celestial North will have stress sliding off your shoulders and tense muscles relaxing as you soak up the peace of nature. The primarily instrumental single is powered by a delicate piano line that rises up into the sky causing your problems to fall away. The rush of water and sighing choir add to the peaceful meditation of the single.
