Cat Cork – Disappear (2024)

With a fondness for cats, a passion for music, and an infectiousness oozing through his melodies, Cat Cork is the musician we never knew we needed and now that he’s here it’s one we never want to lose. After almost one decade of musical absence from his album Ulysses, Australian singer-songwriter Stuart Cork (aka Cat Cork) returned with his critically acclaimed single ‘Post Man’. ‘Post Man’ turned our heads with floods of folk and pop rushing across our ears, slivering into our brains and ensnaring our senses; but we aren’t the only ones. Making waves internationally, Cork has gained critical acclaim far beyond his Aussie borders from Europe, North America and South America. Come with us as we delve into his song ‘Disappear’.

Taken from his new album Silver and Gold, ‘Disappear’ joins ‘Post Man’ as a kitten peaking out of the big basket that is the album. Standing out as the only kitten with a black spot over its eye, ‘Disappear’ is an amalgamation of pop and rock bound in both a rough and smooth wrapper. As with ‘Weary Worrier’, ‘Disappear’ is heavy with powerful guitars; however, the underlying synths give it a unique synth-pop vibe.

Recorded and produced with long-time collaborator Cameron Taylor, ‘Disappear’ falls somewhere between Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode with dark simplicity; then again, the stark abruptness simmers with kaleidoscopic intensity. Punctuating the melody with direct vocals and a synth-inspired beat, Cork draws you in with a direct narrative…then it goes a bit crazy. The kaleidoscope of sound breaks through in tumultuous glory. Immersive and overwhelmingly engulfing, the guitar-based ending knocks you off your feet as we “all just disappear”. Cork explains:

“It is a bit more direct and stark. The song reflects my wide tastes in music. I tend to write songs as they come to me and not stay within one particular genre. This one is a bit 80s retro… The song is a love song, sort of and it has a massive guitar-based ending that will polarise. Some people who have heard it really love it; others really hate it. There is, funnily enough, no middle ground on that…”

In addition to the single, Cat Cork released a lyric video for ‘Disappear’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel.
