Carsten Schnell – Another Day Another Dollar (2022)

For over 30 years, composer Carsten Schnell has been captivating audiences with his unique sound. In 1992, Schnell surprised critics with his debut album Adjust giving them a taste of his unusual, obscure style. While he has been compared to Jean-Michel Jarre, there is an eccentricity in Schnell’s music that is rather inimitable. This is my introduction to Carsten Schnell, but he has been captivating audiences on an international scale for a while. For instance, features on Sinusoidal Music, Lost In The Manor, Rock Era Magazine, and Edgar Allan Poets refer to him as “blues ecstasy” and “peaceful”. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘Another Day Another Dollar’.

Following a musical hiatus, Carsten Schnell returned to making music with a diverse and eclectic style. Combining elements of blues with electronic sounds, his tracks find the balance between organic and synthetic in a sophisticated arrangement. With ‘Another Day Another Dollar’, Schnell nods to the nostalgic sounds of iconic blues artist BB King – which actually makes sense since the primary guitar used in ‘Another Day Another Dollar’ is a Lucille guitar purchased from BB King himself.

A guitar-driven single, ‘Another Day Another Dollar’ differs from Schnell’s previous work with its smooth, slick and flowing soundscape. Where ‘One Two Three’ and ‘Dream Break’ have a strong electronic sound, ‘Another Day Another Dollar’ takes a step back from any electronica highlighting the beauty of simple blues. His finger-picking style enhances the sensuality of the song, while the interspersed piano weaves a vulnerability into the sonic tapestry.

It is true that Carsten Schnell’s music has a contemporary electricity sparked by the modern-day electropop sound; however, ‘Another Day Another Dollar’ brings electricity of its own in the nostalgic arrangement. Laid back, chilled out and soul-soaring, the groovy vibes of this tune make you forget about your daily struggles and bring a smile to your face.
