CARRIE ABYSS – mass destruction (of my head) (2024)

The brainchild of UK-based singer-songwriter Bernadette Lara (vocals), CARRIE ABYSS embraces cathartic rage, imperfection, angst and tragedy in a “punch-in-the-guts distillation of… the wide range of influences that has misogyny, queerphobia and the oppressive political situation of her native Türkiye….” Joined by fellow musicians Tunc Kuzay (guitar), Tibet Tunaboyu (bass), and Jonathan Adeyemi (drums), the foursome pushes the boundaries of hard rock to the limits with a unique melodic metal meets alternative rock tone.

While CARRIE ABYSS has performed at various venues around London, quickly establishing a name in the underground scene, they begin to reach beyond the London borders with the debut single ‘mass destruction (of my head)’. Recorded and produced at City and Goldsmiths University by Bernadette Lara, with mixing by Onur Erden Ünal and mastering by Stephen Kerrison, ‘mass destruction (of my head)” is an eclectic blend of haunting vocals, crashing drums, scorching guitars and a bold bass.

CARRIE ABYSS could easily create a mishmash of roaring instruments with pounding, head-whipping insanity; however, the delicacy of the arrangement breathes sophistication, elegance and an appreciation of emotion within sound. Sparse and barebones, the verses carry intense depth despite the simplistic approach. The chorus is something else altogether capturing the protagonist’s rage and releasing it with a deep breath and scream.

I find it intriguing that ‘mass destruction (of my head)’ can be played as a part of a melodic metal playlist as just another track, but it is not just another track. Exploring the complexities of reality in a gritty sense of silent rage, CARRIE ABYSS rips the band-aid off an open wound in their debut track. If Nine Inch Nails had a child with Evanescence, the chances are the kid would be CARRIE ABYSS, if ‘mass destruction (of my head)’ is anything to go by.
