Carnival Kid – Porcelain (2020)

Carnival Kid is a solo artist who has been making music in bands and on his own since around the age of 14. While he has been interested in music and played in bands, he decided to invest more time into it in 2019. He released his first EP that dealt with the struggle of coming to terms with the roles he now had in life. His latest release ‘Porcelain’ takes a different approach.

This single is all about obsession and self-representation. It is a tongue-in-cheek view of the discrepancy between depictions and reality. The track is his fourth release of the year and part of his upcoming EP Ever Present Past.

‘Porcelain’ hooks you with the funky laid-back melody. The shuffling beat flows through you and makes you feel at ease. There is a laziness to the melody that you can easily drags you along for the ride. While the melody remains stable throughout the song, there are different notes that come in and out that add to the relaxed vibe. Even the introduction of guitar lines can’t stop you feeling mellow.

The relaxation brought on by the melody is enhanced by the vocal performance. The vocals have a dreamy quality to them making them a hazy layer over the music. Lyrically, this song actually has a lot going on which you might not expect based on the melody. While the lyrics could be seen as sombre, there is a hint of something in the performance that lightens them.

If you are looking for a funky mellow track that is relaxing while looking at a deep topic, ‘Porcelain’ by Carnival Kid is probably what you want. The easy melody is like a lazy raft floating down a river while the vocals create a dreamy atmosphere.
