Carlos Ucedda – At The Bottom (2024)
I first came across the name Carlos Ucedda when reviewing Luke Tangerine’s dream pop single ‘I Adore You’. Using his soulful voice and emotionally charged melody, Ucedda quickly made an impression with vibrant, diverse and intriguing music. Today, I came across the Spanish artist’s solo project as his music crossed my virtual desk. With the same vivacity and enthusiasm, he reaches into my soul bringing a hypnotic gaze to my eyes. The latest addition to his discography is the single ‘At The Bottom’.
Following his single ‘Short Time My Love’, ‘At The Bottom’ sees Ucedda shift from psychedelic dream-pop to a heavier alternative pop meets electronic pop sound. Wistful mysticism remains throughout Ucedda’s melodies; however, the new single leans toward retro post-punk desperation with modern-day pop edginess. Despite having these various genre references, Ucedda remains indefinable with his rich musical diversity.
One aspect I enjoy about Carlos Ucedda’s music is the elegant alignment with the single’s theme. Tapping into the disassociation of body and mind, ‘At The Bottom’ oozes through the cracks of consciousness showcasing the depths of one’s being. Ucedda explains (paraphrased from the Spanish translation):
“’At The Bottom’ is reflected in certain situations where our minds take you to paths that your body does not. Finding itself in the depths of your mind without any connection…”
In one way, a highly philosophical song questioning the place of unconsciousness in reality; however, the poetic lyricism tackles the issue of mind-affecting conditions like dementia. Psychedelic swirls fuse with synth-driven bubbles setting you off on a heart-filling, soul-stirring sonic river. Whether philosophical or a delve into a perplexed and affected mind, ‘At The Bottom’ can befuddle you with its intimate melody.
In addition to the single, Carlos Ucedda released an official music video for ‘At The Bottom’. You can view the video below or on his YouTube channel. While it is mild, this video uses lighting effects that can trigger seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised.
