Carl De Villa – In My Father’s Hands (2020)

Combining elements of pop, RnB and soul, Carl De Villa is a Filipino-Australian artist with a voice to melt your heart. Featured on The Voice Australia, Seven Network’s All Together Now, as well as playing sold-out gigs throughout Australia, the Sydney-based crooner is building a reputation for honest material with engaging performances. Following his well-received singles ‘Ok Lang’ and ‘Walk Away’ in 2018, De Villa released several more critically acclaimed tracks alongside a debut album.

Released as a single during 2020, ‘In My Father’s Hands’ is an emotional and moving track about a difficult relationship with one’s father. As part of De Villa’s debut album War Cry, the single stands out as a piano-driven tune with simple melodies that showcase De Villa’s versatility as an artist. Including the upbeat pop tunes ‘War Cry’ and ‘Fly’, War Cry is a collection of original material incorporating moving harmonies using different styles.

Inspired by the soul meets RnB meets pop stylings of Bruno Mars and Sam Smith, De Villa presents flowing, soothing instrumentation with emotive vocals. Reminiscent of the legendary John Legend, the Sydney-based artist elegantly smothers a piano-driven track with his warm dulcet tones. What enhances the tenderness of ‘In My Father’s Hands’ is not the melody, but the spine-chilling and sincere lyricism.

“‘In My Father’s Hands’ is a heartrending reflection on a fraught relationship with a father, an inspiration and promise to do better than what was done to you with your precious child.” – Carl De Villa on ‘In My Father’s Hands’
