Caravãna Sun – Only The Night (2024)

With a reputation for confident live performances that transcend the stage to our speakers in their moving melodies, Caravãna Sun is a masterful four-piece that understands the power and impact of beautiful music. This might be my first taste of the Australia-based group; however, the band have turned heads internationally for over a decade. Sharing the stage with heavyweight artists like Madness, UB40 and The Cat Empire, they are by no means newbies on the scene. Come with us as we dive headfirst into one of their most recent singles, ‘Only The Night’.

The title track from Caravãna Sun’s 2024 EP, ‘Only The Night’ draws together various types of pop in a shimmering, kaleidoscopic sonic bubble. With its rhythmic waves and charming twinkles of sound, you feel lost in a wistful haze as whispers of nostalgic synth-pop hang in the air. Interestingly, while there is a reminiscence of 1980s pop, a strong contemporary vibe joins the eras with sophisticated elegance.

One aspect I find intriguing is how the combination of bold beats, soaring guitars, keyboards and synth-filled wells of music is chilled out, a hint of vulnerability exists with the kaleidoscopic sweep of sound. Confident and rich, but the slips of fragility intricately interweave through Ant Beard’s mellifluous vocals.

Melodically, Caravãna Sun takes you on a musical journey that is simultaneously soothing calm and upbeat tempos; however, it is the lyrics that add some depth to the track. A song of resilience, empowerment, strength and hope for the future, ‘Only The Night’ builds you up instead of letting you fall. Frontman Ant Beard explains:

“’Only The Night’ is about embracing the hard times. It’s always darkest before the dawn. It’s about revelling in the realness of hard times, being able to laugh in the hardest moments knowing that it’s these hard times that unite what it means to be human.”
