Cara Doc – In Your Company (2023)

Despite having only two releases to her name (at least, according to Spotify), singer-songwriter Cara Doc is already turning heads beyond her Northern Irish borders. Described as “…passionate” (Sinusoidal Music) and “…wonderfully warm and mesmerising” (Mystic Sons), Doc has established herself as an emerging artist to which we must pay attention. Needless to say, this is my introduction to Cara Doc, but her intriguing, heartfelt and tender music makes me feel like I have known her all my life. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘In Your Company’.

Taken from her upcoming debut album, Ode to the Oversoul, ‘In Your Company’ focuses on “…the friendship between romantic partners and the impact of losing a friend as well as a love when it all ends.” The saying goes that strong romances are often based on solid friendships but, as Cara Doc asks, what happens with things go awry? Is there really something like an amicable break-up resulting in best friends? I’ve seen it happen, however, human curiosity still questions the emotional element of these happenings.

Recorded and co-produced at Tree Song Studies with renowned engineer and musician Michael Mormecha, ‘In Your Company’ retains the Doc’s haunting vocals navigating us through a hazy sonic forest. A sense of melancholia slivers through the wistful melody with soft drums, soothing backing vocals and a dynamic lead guitar (courtesy of guitarist John ‘Doc’ Doherty). What I find intriguing about the melody is not the spiritual soul-stirring sensation, but how a line between raw acoustic-ness and bold synthetic sounds is elegantly drawn.

As I mentioned, ‘In Your Company’ joins debut single ‘Parole’ on Cara Doc’s forthcoming album Ode to the Oversoul. Touching on the emotional aspects of human nature and tapping deep into the human soul, I believe Cara Doc is building a style to be compared to Shakespeare’s Sister and The Cranberries.
