Canisha – Save You From Yourself (2024)
Eager to explore various areas of pop music, singer-songwriter Canisha takes different slicks of pop and concocts her brand of musical magic. As a younger individual, Canisha was inspired by Adele and more recently, she finds Harry Styles a strong influence; yet, regardless of the inspiration, Canisha wants people to connect with her music, themselves and the world around them. From the grit of social anxiety and mental health to the glory of acceptance and empowerment, her vulnerability shines through with sophistication and elegance. The latest addition to her discography is the single ‘Save You From Yourself’.
To save a person from themselves conjures up dark thoughts of dragging a person away from the dark into the light. Sadly, that dark is not some massive situation but inner turmoil and that’s much harder to overcome. It is this awareness of mental health issues, inner conflict, tragedy and despair that allows Canisha to dip into the most painful themes; however, a lightness exists as she gathers the intricacy in an intimate narrative. When speaking about ‘Save You From Yourself’, Canisha explains:
“This track explores my fear for a loved one who is struggling with their mental health and turning to alcohol. It’s my most vulnerable track to date…”
Lyrically, Canisha’s natural storytelling skills weave a poetic web about listeners; however, it is the melodic interplay between vulnerable words and moving sounds that adds weightiness to ‘Save You From Yourself’. Produced with Anthony Liddell and Jake Amy, the track emerged from its original acoustic tone to a powerful rush of pop-tinged beats. For me, however, the track finds a line between electronic elements and organic tones and then blurs it all in a harmonic rhythm. Moreover, the track brims with kaleidoscopic charm but precise simplicity exists in a strong piano, bold vocals, and intriguing backing choir.
So, overall, what is my opinion of ‘Save You From Yourself’ and Canisha? While Canisha has a love of pop music, I find her dulcet voice lilting strongly toward a soul-tinged tone in this and previous material. If you love Adele, you’ll love Canisha. If you love Ellie Goulding, you’ll love Canisha. I cannot wait for more from this Australian songstress.
